An Update

Hello Everyone, Well i am pleased to say that i will be returning to school on Thursday 19th of March, It has been exactly one month today since my operation. All has gone well with my recovery and i am very much looking forward to getting back into the class and catching up with all the students and the learning that they have been doing in the recent weeks.

The next few weeks will be busy as always and i have secured dates for the class camp, but am just waiting on a final confirmation from the Sailing Instructors about the day the can take us sailing. Anyway the camp is scheduled to be from Wednesday 1st April to Friday 3rd April. As discussed wit some people already, parent help is needed for us to have our camp run smoothly, so if you are still able to help out or please let me know via emial or note.

I would like to make some time available in the remaining weeks of this term for parent interviews. These interviews are a chance for you to share any information and background on your son/daughter child that will assist me with planning their learnign throughout the year. I will have information out soon on dates and times i will be available to meet with people.

Any concerns of issues you may have with your child's learing and time at school, please feel free to get in touch with me and we can discuss things.

Many thanks for your understanding of my recent absence

I look forward to talking with you all again soon

Andrew Sloan

Copy of Swimming Notice

4 February 2009

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Once again Balmacewen Intermediate has decided to use Moana Pool’s ‘Swimsation’ programme for our swimming lessons this year. We feel this is more beneficial for your child’s swimming development.

Swimsation coaches will take a half hour session with each class at Moana Pool, four times during the next four weeks. The school swimming sports will be held at the conclusion of these sessions on Friday 13th March.

Room 13’s swimming sessions are as follows:

Session 1
Tuesday 10th Feb 11.30am – 12.00noon
Session 2
Wedneday 25th Feb 11.30am – 12.00noon
Session 3
Wednesday 4th March 11.30am- 12.00noon

Session 4
Monday 9th March 2.00-2.30noon

As a class we will be walking to and from the pool, and we require 2 adult helpers per class in order to meet safety requirements. Please complete the form below if you can assist with this.

Children will need to bring their togs and towel to school and they will walk down to the pool and return to school in their correct PE uniform. You will notice that some swimming sessions conclude at 2.45pm. Students will be able to walk home from the pool for these sessions if they have parental permission. (Please indicate on the form below).

The cost of swimming has increased slightly this year due to Swimsation and will be $3.25 a session. Please pay no later than one day before each swimming session. Or alternatively you can pay $13 before the first session.

Please complete the permission slip below.

Kind regards

Andrew Sloan

Letter to Parents Monday 2nd February

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Hi, I’m Andrew Sloan, your child’s teacher for 2009. I am excited about the prospect of another enjoyable year with a great bunch of students. I am looking forward to getting to know all of your children over the next couple of weeks as they learn their way around the school, get to know the routines and expectations of room 13, and make new friends.

Term 1 is going to be a really busy term and there are a lot of exciting activities planned. During the year many school activities require the help and support of parents, and I will try and get the dates and times out as soon as possible so that parents can arrange to help wherever possible.

We start swimming next week so this could be your first opportunity to help out; a notice regarding this will be going home later this week. Next on the agenda is the room 13 class camp from Wednesday 11th-Friday 13th March. We will be heading off to Waihola for our three day Camp and this is always heaps of fun and a great way for the students to get to know each other a little better. I will be sending out further information regarding the camp in due course.

Throughout the year I will be keeping in touch via newsletters regarding class programmes and class activities, but as we know this sometimes get left in bags! So we have a class page where student notices, class happenings and students work and other neat stuff will be shared. The address for our class blog page is http://www.balmac13.blogspot.com/ there is also a link to this from the school website which also has important information and happenings at http://www.balmacewen.school.nz/ If you can’t make it to the “meet the teacher” night on the 11th of February and you have an e-mail address, send it along to school so that I can contact you via email if necessary.

Intermediate is a time when students need to start getting into the habit of completing homework in preparation for high school. The students in Room 13 will usually have homework each night with the exception of Friday (unless it’s really important). Homework mainly consists of current themes or topics studied at school. The students will have inquiry assignments over the course of the year and are made very aware of due dates so that they can manage their time effectively.
The students have spelling and language tasks to complete each week also.

The students will have fitness daily, so they will need to have their correct school P.E gear with them every day. If their P.E. gear needs to be washed they can bring replacement gear along with a note of explanation.

I will do my best to ensure your child has a worthwhile, fun and challenging year. I have high expectations of my students and want them to be the best that they can be, as well as make sure they have fun along the way. I expect work to be completed both to the best of their ability and on time.

My challenge to the students is to get involved. There will be lots of opportunities for the students to join sports teams and take part in cultural activities this year and I encourage the students to participate in some of these. It’s a great way for them to meet new friends and to try new things. They are notified about these activities via the school notices.

I’m really looking forward to this year and hope to see many of you next Wednesday at the “meet the teacher” evening.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me either through the school or at this email address.

Kind Regards
Andrew Sloan
